Texas Risk Factors

WHY TEXAS DEALERS NEED SPECIALIZED COVERAGE

Texas has some of the most severe weather in the country, creating unique and significant risks for auto dealers. Understanding these risks is critical to choosing the right insurance program:

Critical

Hail Damage

Texas leads the nation in hail claims. The I-35 corridor from San Antonio to Dallas is known as 'Hail Alley.' A single hailstorm can total dozens of vehicles on an open lot. Comprehensive DOL coverage is non-negotiable for Texas dealers.

Critical

Tornado & Windstorm

Texas averages 130+ tornadoes per year — more than any other state. Windstorm damage to inventory, buildings, and signage is a constant threat, especially in North Texas and the Panhandle.

High

Flooding

Flash flooding is common across Texas, particularly in the Houston metro, Hill Country, and coastal areas. Standard DOL may exclude flood — ask about adding flood coverage to your program.

High

Theft & Catalytic Converter Theft

Texas metro areas (Houston, Dallas, San Antonio) have elevated vehicle theft and catalytic converter theft rates. DOL covers vehicle theft; consider additional security measures and comprehensive coverage.

Moderate

Extreme Heat

Texas summers regularly exceed 100°F. Extended heat exposure can damage vehicle interiors, batteries, and tires. While not typically a covered peril, it increases the importance of maintaining comprehensive coverage.

Getting Licensed

HOW TO GET A TEXAS DEALER LICENSE (GDN)

Opening a dealership in Texas? Here's a step-by-step guide to getting your Texas GDN (General Distinguishing Number) dealer license from the TxDMV:

1

Choose Your Dealer License Type

Texas offers several GDN (General Distinguishing Number) types: independent, franchise, wholesale, and more. Choose the one that matches your business model.

2

Complete Pre-License Education

Texas requires completion of a TxDMV-approved dealer education course. The course covers Texas dealer laws, title procedures, and consumer protection.

3

Obtain a Surety Bond

Purchase a $25,000 Texas motor vehicle dealer surety bond from an authorized surety company. Most bonds are issued same-day.

4

Secure Garage Liability Insurance

Obtain garage liability insurance meeting Texas minimums ($30K/$60K BI, $25K PD). We recommend $1M CSL — most lenders and auction houses require it.

5

Establish a Dealer Location

Your lot must have a permanent building with office space, a display area, and signage visible from the road. Texas requires a physical location — no home-based dealers.

6

Apply with the TxDMV

Submit your GDN application online through the TxDMV eLICENSING system with your bond, insurance certificate, lease/deed, and business registration.
